Just like pmie_check used to, pmie_daily assumed that tr(1) it is using
is going to be GNU-compatible: on Solaris default tr(1) is not and it
cannot grok the pmie's status files.
Use strings(1) instead of tr(1) to extract relevant bits out of those
files.
